Drama
Within the creative curriculum at Ewell Castle School we offer opportunities for children to build self-assurance. To create and explore performance, but also to develop the tools in which to present or celebrate their talents, either individually or within a group. We start early with the Pre-Prep children developing confidence and performance skills in preparation for the Nativity Production at the end of the Christmas Term. Pupils in Years 1 to 6 have weekly drama lessons with a specialist teacher. Drama lessons in all years focus on developing children’s confidence in talking to an audience or performing. Children are also given opportunities to recite poems, speak in assemblies and contribute to discussions in class.
Drama is an integral part of our curriculum, reflecting the topics taught in Years 1-3 such as ‘The living Rainforest’ and ‘Inventors’. In addition, we enhance the children’s experience of drama by theatre visits, workshops, hosting professional companies and the production of year group plays or performances once a year. Year 6 Preparatory School children have the opportunity to watch dress rehearsals of Senior School productions at the Castle and Epsom Playhouse, developing their interest and love of the performing arts.
There are many opportunities for children to perform to an audience during the school year and children take part with energy and enthusiasm in School productions and celebrations such as Harvest Festival, class assemblies and the Christmas Concert.
