Ewell Castle's online learning environment (ecole) is powered by Moodle, the same open source virtual learning system as the Open University.

ecole extends the classroom into the home. Boys in the senior school can gain access to a growing body of support material by logging in at school during break, or at home via the school web site. Here exam students may find revision materials that provide support while they are on Study Leave or vacation. All students will find course materials, e.g. powerpoints, videos, worksheets and class or whole school forums which support many of the subjects that they are learning in school. Boys can also in some instances, obtain the materials and instructions for assignments that can be submitted online and which are then marked and returned by their teachers entirely in ecole. This is especially useful in support of after school clubs or for providing extension materials for those students who wish to go beyond the bounds of the normal curriculum.

The Junior School also benefits from ecole as their teachers are able to provide a secure class web site which is focussed on showcasing work and communicating effectively with home. Boys and girls in the Junior School may also be able to contribute to a class news page and see galleries of photos and reports of trips as well as find useful links to fun learning activities that can be done at home.

A VLE?

The purpose of our virtual learning environment is to enrich the students' learning, to encourage independent learning and to provide support and a sense of a community as the students engage in collaborative learning.

The VLE is also now a major part of our Emergency Procedures which would swing into effect should the school be required to close for a period. Students were for example, purposefully engaged during the heavy snow experienced in recent times. We are now able to support and keep in contact with all students should the need arise.
